How to Say No and Stop Being Too Busy

Do you feel overwhelmed and overcommitted, but think being too busy is just something you have to learn to live with? Here's how to say No and stop being too busy.

Is Everyone Too Busy… or Just Misaligned?

Everyone says they’re busy.

Successful women.
Ministry leaders.
Mothers.
Entrepreneurs.
Homeschool moms.
Coaches.

“We’re in a busy season.”
“It’ll slow down soon.”
“I just need to cut a few things.”

But what if it’s not just busyness?

What if it’s misalignment?

What if the exhaustion isn’t from doing too much… but from doing what God never asked you to carry?

The Hidden Cost of “Good” Commitments

Most Christian women I talk to aren’t lazy.

They’re faithful.
Responsible.
Capable.
Dependable.

They say yes to good things.

But good things can quietly crowd out God things.

You can be fully committed…
and still be completely drained.

You can look productive…
and be spiritually depleted.

You can build something impressive…
and feel strangely disconnected from peace.

And if you are not careful, “busy” becomes a badge of honor.

But exhaustion is not a fruit of the Spirit.

God’s Design Was Never Frantic

Scripture paints a different picture of leadership and family life.

Psalm 78:1–4 speaks of fathers teaching their children the works of God. That requires time. Presence. Margin.

You cannot disciple your children…
or your clients…
or your audience…
if you are constantly rushing.

You cannot lead from rest if you never stop long enough to hear Him.

The world trains us to react.
God calls us to respond.

The world celebrates hustle.
God honors faithfulness.

There is a difference.

Why Christian Women Are So Overwhelmed

Here’s what I see over and over:

🌟 We Overcommit Because We Don’t Want To Disappoint
🌟 We Compare And Feel Behind
🌟 We Believe “If I Don’t Do It, No One Will”
🌟 We Confuse Urgent With Eternal
🌟 We Build Individual Platforms Instead Of Family Strength

And underneath it all?

Fear.
Performance.
People-pleasing.
Pride.
Control.

Sometimes we are busy because we do not trust that God will move if we don’t.

That’s hard to admit… but freeing when you do.

The 10 Truths That Anchor Me

When everything feels unstable, I return to simple, unshakable truths:

  1. God Is Sovereign.

  2. God Rules Everything.

  3. God Is In Control.

  4. God Desires That All Turn To Him.

  5. God Is The Creator.

  6. God Alone Is Worthy Of Worship.

  7. Jesus Christ Is The Savior And Messiah.

  8. Salvation Is Found In Him Alone.

  9. Christ Will Return To Judge And Reign.

  10. Eternity Is Real.

These truths reframe everything.

When you truly believe God is sovereign, you stop grasping for control.

When you believe eternity matters, you choose differently.

Peace flows from theology.

Practical Guardrails For a Woman Who Wants To Lead From Rest

These are not rigid rules. They are guardrails.

  💖 Pray Before Every Commitment
Never say yes on the spot. Give yourself space. Sleep on it. Ask the Lord directly: “Is this mine to carry?”

💖 Decide In Advance How Many Evenings You Will Give Away
If your calendar is full every night, your relationships will suffer. Choose margin intentionally.

💖 Concentrate On Family Ministry Before Individual Spotlight
Unity strengthens calling. Fragmentation weakens it.

  💖 Stop Believing You’re Indispensable
If something only works when you overextend yourself… it may not be God’s design.

  💖 Let Your Husband Lead
Leadership in the home brings clarity and covering. When the family moves in one direction, peace increases.

  💖 Put Eternal First
Time in the Word. Prayer. Conversations that disciple hearts. These are not extras. They are foundations.

The Technology Trap

You can be physically home and spiritually absent.

Screens separate hearts faster than distance ever did.

Be intentional about:

  🌟 Powering Off
🌟 Delaying Personal Devices For Young Children
🌟 Keeping Electronics Out Of Bedrooms
  🌟 Creating Conversation Spaces

Discipleship rarely happens in noise.

It happens in unhurried moments.

And as your children grow, those late-night conversations become sacred.

You cannot manufacture them.

But you can make space for them.

Choose What Is Eternal, Not Merely Urgent

Proverbs 13:20 reminds us that who we walk with shapes who we become.

1 Timothy 4:8 reminds us that godliness profits for eternity.

Charles Hummel’s The Tyranny of the Urgent describes how urgent demands steal our focus from what truly matters.

The question is not:

“Can I fit this in?”

The question is:

“Will this move us toward God’s purpose for our family?”

If everyone copied your life…
would that glorify the Lord?

That question has redirected me more than once.

What Families Can Do Instead

When you slow down, you create room for:

  💖 Reading Scripture Together
  💖 Memorizing The Word
  💖 Learning Skills Side-By-Side
💖 Work Projects That Build Character
  💖 Hosting Meaningful Conversations
  💖 Creative And Service-Based Activities

Strong families are not built accidentally.

They are built intentionally.

This Is Not About Isolation

It’s about alignment.

It’s about leadership.

It’s about refusing to run a race you never signed up for.

If you feel scattered and stretched thin, I encourage you to begin here:

Pray.
Pause.
Audit your calendar.
Remove one commitment.
Restore one evening at home.

Then watch what happens to your peace.

You Were Not Created To Live Reactionary

You were uniquely created by God for a purpose.

Not to copy.
Not to compete.
Not to scramble.
Not to survive.

But to lead from rest.

is no.
