Overcoming Procrastinating Perfectionism

Jan 22, 2026
Are you stuck in procrastinating perfectionism? Learn how to stop waiting for perfect and start leading yourself well with faith and clarity.

Why Christian Women Get Stuck, and How to Move Forward with Faith, Not Fear

For a long time, I thought procrastination was a discipline problem.

I assumed I needed better habits, more motivation, or a stronger system. I believed that if I could just get more organized, or try harder, I would finally follow through.

What I eventually learned is this:

Most procrastination in Christian women is not laziness.
It is fear, often disguised as wisdom.

And perfectionism is usually the place where that fear hides.

When Waiting Feels Spiritual (But Isn’t)

Let me say something important right away.

Not all waiting is procrastination.

Sometimes God very clearly says, “Wait.”

But procrastination feels different.

It sounds like:

  • “I just need a little more time.”
  • “I want to be sure this is exactly right.”
  • “I’ll start once I feel more ready.”

It often feels responsible.
It can even feel spiritual.

But underneath it is often fear.

Fear of getting it wrong.
Fear of being seen.
Fear of disappointing someone.

Fear of putting something into the world that feels unfinished.

The Hard Truth I Had to Face

At some point, God confronted me with a humbling question:

Even if I knew what “perfect” was…
why would I think I could achieve it?

That isn’t humility.
That’s pride.

Imperfection is not sin.
But pride is.

God makes it clear in His Word that He resists the proud.

Perfectionism quietly places us at the center, as if we get to decide when something is worthy enough to be released. It assumes we have the authority to define “good enough.”

That realization changed everything for me.

Why “Done” Matters More Than “Perfect”

Here’s another truth that set me free:

Nothing I create helps anyone until it gets out there.

As long as something stays hidden, endlessly tweaked, or perpetually unfinished, no one is helped by it.

I’ve come to believe that the enemy doesn’t need to convince Christian women to believe lies. He simply needs to keep them silent.

Perfectionism delays obedience.
Procrastination stalls impact.

And while we wait for perfect, people who could be helped never hear the message God placed in us to share.

How God Used My Imperfect Story

Over time, I began to see how God used the parts of my life I once wished away.

He used my mistakes.
He used my weaknesses.
He used the parts of my story that felt messy and unfinished.

That helped me understand why “done is better than perfect.”

Not because excellence doesn’t matter, but because obedience matters more.

People don’t connect with you because you’re polished.
They connect with you because you’re real.

It is often our imperfections, surrendered to God, that become the clearest evidence of His grace at work.

Wisdom vs. Fear

This distinction matters deeply.

Wisdom waits on God.
Fear waits on certainty.

If God has said “wait,” there will be peace in the waiting.

But if you’ve been stuck for a long time, not because God said no, but because you’re afraid of getting it wrong, that’s not wisdom.

That’s fear asking to be obeyed.

And fear makes a poor leader.

Learning to Lead Yourself First

There was a moment when I realized that before I could lead anyone else, I needed to learn how to lead myself.

I stopped waiting to feel confident.
I stopped waiting to feel ready.
I stopped waiting to feel certain.

Instead, I began taking faithful steps and trusting God to refine things along the way.

That’s what it means to lead yourself first.

And that’s how you learn to lead from rest.

Not from pressure.
Not from urgency.
Not from comparison.

But from trust.

A Gentle Invitation

If God has placed something on your heart, He already knew you were imperfect when He did.

Your obedience doesn’t need to be flawless.
It needs to be faithful.

What you’re holding back does not need to be perfect before God can use it.

It just needs to be released.

If this resonates with you, this is exactly the kind of inner work we walk through inside Lead Well, where Christian women learn how to lead themselves with clarity, confidence, and peace, without hustle or pressure.

You don’t have to wait any longer.

Final encouragement

Pause.
Pray.
And take the next faithful step God has already made clear.

Blessings,
